Homemade Refried Beans (Print-Friendly Version)

Creamy, flavorful pinto beans seasoned with garlic, onions and spices - perfect for tacos, burritos or as a delicious side dish.

# What You'll Need:

→ Main Ingredients

01 - 2 tablespoons olive oil
02 - 1 small onion, diced
03 - 3 cloves garlic, minced
04 - 1 teaspoon chili powder
05 - ½ teaspoon ground cumin
06 - 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
07 - ¼ teaspoon salt
08 - 30 ounces pinto beans, rinsed and drained (2 cans, 15 oz each)
09 - ½ cup water
10 - 1 tablespoon lime juice

# How to Make It:

01 - Heat the olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they have softened and become translucent, about 5 minutes.
02 - Add the garlic, chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, and salt. Stir and cook for another 30 seconds until aromatic.
03 - Add the beans and water, stir, and cook covered for 5 minutes.
04 - Remove the lid and reduce the heat to low. Using a potato masher, mash the beans until the desired consistency is achieved. For a smoother and creamier consistency, use an immersion blender.
05 - Turn off the heat and stir in the lime juice. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt if necessary.

# Additional Tips:

01 - If using dry beans, soak and cook them before starting the recipe. This step significantly increases preparation time.
02 - For a smoother consistency, chop the onion finely before cooking.
03 - If the beans seem dry after mashing, add a splash of water.
04 - Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the fridge.
05 - Cool completely before freezing in airtight containers or bags for up to 8 months.
