Portion the batter evenly into a lined 12-cup muffin tin and bake as directed on the package until a toothpick inserted into the centre of a cupcake comes out clean.

Transfer cupcakes to a wire rack and allow to cool completely before decorating.

Generously frost the tops of each cooled cupcake with black buttercream.

Attach fondant cat ears at the top of each cupcake and press in two candy eyes. Place a chocolate chip for the nose and insert four short strips of black licorice on each side for whiskers.
